Food Babe is a dangerous, cruel and thoroughly uneducated purveyor of pseudoscience. Vani Hari, Food Babe’s real name, is a great example of why people who are not even remotely qualified should not be giving health advice to the public. Voicing an uninformed opinion is one thing, but presenting information in an authoritative manner as if you are an expert should not be attempted by a non-expert, especially if you are as astoundingly unqualified and uneducated as Vani Hari “Food Babe”.
What’s worse, “Food Babe” is making millions of dollars each year spreading misinformation and selling lies to the public. Further complicating things, “Food Babe” is so overwhelmingly and comprehensively uneducated that she doesn’t even realize she’s selling lies for millions and giving you tremendously inaccurate “tips” disguised as “health advice.” Profiting on your ignorance and the vulnerability of the public is an abomination.
Food Babe’s opinions overwhelmingly demonstrate her lack of the most basic scientific literacy. There are far too many examples of “Food Babe’s” misguided opinions and uneducated thoughts about health, but to give you just a few examples in no particular order:
1. Food Babe was shocked that the recycled air in an airplane’s cabin contained nitrogen gas. Our atmosphere is mostly nitrogen gas (78%) and 21% oxygen.
2. In her own words, “When you look at the ingredients [in food], if you can’t spell it or pronounce it, you probably shouldn’t eat it.” Your entire body is made of chemicals, from every cell in your organs to every hair follicle. All of the matter in the universe is composed of chemicals. Everything you hear, see, smell, taste, and touch involves chemistry and chemicals (matter). Knowing the difference between what’s safe to ingest and what’s toxic requires educating yourself beyond simply being unable to pronounce a chemical name.
3. Food Babe thinks you can hurt water’s feelings by shouting at it or calling it bad names. I don’t even know where to begin with this… But to start, I would recommend she schedule an appointment with a psychiatrist and medical professional if she’s having conversations with her water.
4. Many of the “scary chemicals” Food Babe blogs about are the same exact chemicals, metabolic precursors and minerals required to sustain life on Earth. Vani needs to take my introductory biology, chemistry and science class. Though, she’s gone so far down the rabbit hole I’m not even sure Food Babe is educable at this point.
In the words of Thomas Cardinal Wolsey (1471–1530), “Be very, very careful what you put into that head, because you will never, ever get it out.”
If any of you have health concerns or questions about biology, chemistry, biochemistry, metabolism, vitamins, genetics, epigenetics, health or nutrition, I’m more than happy to answer your questions or concerns. I won’t know all of the answers but the ones I do will actually be based on hard scientific evidence not fear- based delusions.
Unlike millionaire Vani Hari, I’m actually trained in all of these areas and I do not profit from answering questions about science and health. As a biomedical researcher, with a PhD, working at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (Johns Hopkins Medicine) I am barely making ends meet. Performing biomedical research, working long hours with no overtime pay and seeking the honest truth about the world we live in is not a career you pursue if you are motivated by financial gain or celebrity status (as with “Food Babe”).
